This first show in New York of paintings by Robert Melzmuf is a strong offering. The seventeen abstract works ranging in size from 11 x 9” to 66 x 46” concern themselves with the action of paint and how the spatial relationship within the canvas borders play out. Painting such as ”I Say It Is” (46 x 40”), “Ash Set Spinning” (11 x 9”) and “My Fingers Spread Wide” (66 x 46”) demonstrate a freedom of execution as well as the artist’s considered use of paint, wax, and scraping. With mindful thoughts of composition, he succeeds in transforming simple objects into non-objective expressions of movement. Colors are kept to earth shades. A total of seventeen works are presented here, and indicates a painter who is constantly exploring. This is a stand out debut.
